Z Tags Product Reviews

Look at What Livestock Producers Are Saying About Z Tags.

Z Tags were introduced in 1992, and the unique, flexible one-piece design and advanced application system quickly became a big hit with livestock producers around the globe. Here’s why:

  • Superior retention
  • Outstanding readability
  • Easier application
  • No more torn ears
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • A wide range of sizes & colors

Now, we also offer an advanced two-piece design with the same superior Z Tag advantages. So whichever tags you choose, you can rest assured your Z Tags will last as long as the animals who wear them.

But don’t just take our word for it. See what livestock producers in your area have to say about their Z Tags below:

I buy most of my steers from the local auction house. If they do not have a tag or the tag looks bad, I use Z Tags on them. Over the years, I have noticed that some of the other brands would have to be replaced in time due to wear and tear or failure, and they are replaced with Z Tags. Thanks Z Tags for putting out a quality product.
Barry Huber, Winslow, IL.
I tag my calves at birth using the blank Z Tags and permanent marker, labeling the calf tag with the same identification as the dam. With the two-piece tags, I always had to be careful not to lose the button. I would get ready to apply the tag only to find the button had fallen off. The tag itself would often slide out of the holder. When tagging newborns, I not only have to secure the calf, but keep an eye on mama as well. She may not always be happy about the idea of me grabbing her newborn baby to put the tag in its ear. The last thing I need is a malfunction of my tagging system. With one-piece Z Tags, I no longer have to worry about losing the tag or the button. If I put the tagger in my back pocket, the tag is ready to go when I take it out. I can also easily rotate the tag on the applicator to match the ear I am tagging. As an added bonus, I have less tear-outs with the Z Tags. My record system relies heavily on the ear tag, so a high level of tag retention is very important. Z Tags is a great product and an important part of my operation.

Tags go in really easy, but the best thing is the percent of loss went down by at least ninety percent.
Joey Bass, Prospect, TN
For the past several decades, we have run a commercial brangus cow herd and frequently have had at least 10 ear tags come out over the course of one year. NO MORE!! Z Tags have been a no-nonsense tag that stands up to the rigors of the tough brush our cattle have come to know as home. I have lost 1 tag in the last two years. Yes, two years, and that was due to a dog latching on a little too tight. I'm a believer and will continue to use Z Tags. Thanks for your product!
Corby Gotcher, DDS, Lake Jackson, TX
We have used the Z Tags for the past 3-4 years, mainly because we believe they have better retainment in the cattle's ears. We started using an ear tag method back in the late 60's when I was in college and used several different brands. We have always used large cattle orange-colored tags in both cows and calves (at 60 years of age, my vision ain't what it use to be) and then write on the numbers to correspond with the cow number-and change out those kept for replacements.

I like Z Tags because of easy application and they will stay in longer than other tags I have used.  I am planning on converting all my tags to Z Tags.
Mark Yeatts, Abingdon, VA
I like using Z Tags because of the ease of use.  Pre-printed tags are very easy to read and they do not come out.  It is nice not to have to worry.
Jason Benoit, Welsh, LA
Between 3 different operations and almost 6 years I have loved using Z Tags, at Taylor Cattle we use these tags for newborn calves.  They are lightweight and easy to read and apply.  With no buttons these tags work great to get in a calf and don't tear nearly as much.  I would recommend them to anyone tagging cattle.
Kevin Perkins, Crestwood, KY
Z tags are easy to use on calves and they are easy to take out. They save us a lot of time.
Michelle Marohl , Solen, ND
Tags are simple and safe to use. They stay in the ear and don't fall out.
Wesley Adam Green, Shirley, IL
I switched to Z Tags after a bad experience with the engrave able Ritchie's. I don't care for Allflex, as they didn't seem to hold the ink very well. I have had good retention with the Z Tags. I really like the flip out pin on the applicators, as it doesn't tear the ears on very young calves.
Michael Burgess , Raymond, MT
I have used Z Tags and was well pleased. The pivoting pin on the applicator was very effective.
Mike Young, Lawrenceburg, TN
I have tried all types of ID cow tags and Z Tags and are the ones that stay in the cow/calf ear and holds their visibility for years.
Tommy Martin, Moundville, AL
We have been using Z Tags for several years. We put the 1-piece tags in the calves at birth and use the less-known 2-piece tags in our replacement heifers. There is great retention and little fading on the tags.
Nancy Bath,
We calve out in the pasture and when you have a mama cow breathing down your neck, we use Z Tags because they are quick, durable and they are the most reliable tag on the market today.
Jeff Smeenk, Newell, SD
Z Tags are the easiest tag that I have ever used. The retention rate is great. I use the tags in my baby calves as well as my cows. I have cows that are 8 years old that were tagged with the calf tag and it is still in place and readable.
Wesley Parks, Somerville, TN
I purchase 2-year heifers and the ranch I buy from uses Z Tags. We have been using Y-Tex tags, but leave the original Z Tags intact. On the preprinted Y-Tex tags, we have had to replace almost all of them in less than 2 years because of fade. And the ones that hadn't faded, we had to replace because of loss. Thank goodness we left the original Z Tags intact or else we would of never been able to know what number went with what cow. In almost 200 heifers, I don't believe we have lost any of the Z Tags and are going to switch to Z Tags exclusively in our operation.
Brad Creech, Manager, Harbach Cattle Co. , Ava, MO
Love the durability and ease of first use.
Gary Hoffner, Yuma, CO
We are a small commercial outfit in southeast Iowa. All 60 head of cows wear Z Tags. The spring calves are tagged at birth with Z Tags. We have used Z Tags for the last 10 years. In that time, I believe we have lost 4 from the cow herd and we had a heifer calf loose one for the first time this summer.I like the Z Tags because you don't have buttons. They load fast and you can tag a calf on the run with a cow chasing you with out wondering if the button is all the way in.I also like the longevity of the tags. I have a couple 12-year-old cows that I bought as heifers and they still carry the first and only tag I put in.

Best tag on the market.Why?1) 1 piece2) Highest % retention3) Variety of colors4) Economic value.
David W Hamilton, Thedford, NE
We don't use any ear tags EXCEPT Z Tags on our 130 cow dairy herd, both cows and calves.  100% better retention than our previous tags.
Steve Ellinghuysen, Altura, MN
We have been using your large yellow Z Tags for many years on our commercial Red Angus herd. The reason is: they just work for us. The percentage of our cows that lose these tags is minimal. Their one-piece construction means no lost backs. If you have the tag, you are ready to go and don't have to worry about something falling off the applicator before you can get in the ear. If something works, we like to stick with it. Thanks!
Reed V. Flake - Flake Ranch, Snowflake, AZ
I like Z Tags because they are fast, easy and last.
Travis Kriegel, Hartwick, IA
Z Tags are the greatest for retention and long-lasting color. On 400 head, we have a 98% retention rate.
Mike Shaw , Babb, MT
Love them for new born baby calves. Extremely easy to use. Fast, just wish the holes would not wallow out. I tend to lose tags after a year of administration. Still highly recommend Z Tags for new born calves.
David Brown, Greenback, TN
We use the blank calf tags - we mark them with our brand, calf birth date and mother number so when we have a loose calf we know it's mother and can keep them paired up if we move them around.  The birth date helps with age verification at the sale barn and brings us more money at sale time.
Brian Baum, FT. Morgan, CO
I use Z Tags all the time, very dependable, better than Allflex (Hols. Assoc Tags). Very easy to use.
Robert J Eustice, Byron, MN
We are just a small cow/calf operation, normally running 20-25 pairs. My brother used Y-TEX and/or Duflex tags and, on average, had to replace 5 or 6 tags per year. He also was constantly changing pins and trying to figure out which backs went with which tags.I have been using Z Tags for the last 6 years and have replaced only one calf tag. I found it in a bale ring with a bale I had missed a couple strings on and am guessing a string got looped around it. However it happened, there was no ear damage. I cleaned it up and put the same tag back in the same hole and it was still there when shipped as a yearling.Needless to say, my brother now uses Z Tags also. We use different colors for co-mingling herds on leased land through the breeding season into fall. I prefer the green-bright color with great contrast. They make animals super easy to identify and sort. I wouldn't use anything else.
Mike Huffman,
I have been using Z Tags for quite a few year now and I really like them. The one-piece tag means no fumbling around with buttons and lining things up like the two-piece tags. Also, the break away pin on the applicator is nice for quick release. They seem to hold the numbers great when we give two coats of in. We have lost very few, but when we have, they came out the hole in the ear and didn't split the ear like the tags with buttons.
Todd Swang , Harvey, ND
I use the Z Tags because they stay in for the life of the cow. They are easy to apply and you do not have to worry about torn ears.
Dr. Matthew Garcia, Baton Rouge, LA
We love the Z Tags on our operation. The kids are helping. The Z Tags are so easy to use. There is no better.
Larry Keith, Austinville, VA
For the past 20 years I have used Allflex and Ytex tags, cattle were always losing them. About a year and a half ago we switched to Z Tags. We have very little tag loss if any. I'm really pleased with the Z Tag feedlot tag. I'm looking forward to trying the premium tag.
Robert R Crabb Jr., Staley, NC
I like the tagging procedure, it doesn't tear the ear.  The color stays on good for years.
Eugene Weiler, Mt. Sterling, IA
On our farm we use Z Tags and have used them since 1995. They have proven to be very reliable and we will continue to use this product.
Weldon Wynn, Star City, AR
My husband and I have used Z Tags for our commercial cattle herd for several years.  They are easy to put in, and stay in very well.
Charles & Valerie Bourgeois Farms , Iowa, LA
They don't tear the cows ear.
Frank Lawson, Ellenboro, NC
I have tried just about everyone's ear tags. Z Tags stay in the longest and don't snag on twine. Using your no-fade ink marker, they are readable longer.
Lowell Keller, Mandan, ND
We have been using Z Tags and have good success with them. They seem to be durable, have good retention, and the ink seems to last very well. The majority of the tags we lost were when the cows caught it on something and ripped their ear. There were a couple where the hole in the ear wollowed-out and the tag fell through. The tags have held up and we have not replaced any tags because they did not hold the ink or because they were destroyed. Application is simple. You don't have to worry about losing or breaking studs or having the right needle for the applicator. Overall, a very good product.
Tom Gutermuth,
Z Tags are very easy to apply. Hold in the ear very well through growing period. Marker ink stays on, no repeat. Like the different colors.
Seldom Rest Farm, Auburn, KY
Our operation has been using Z Tags for the past 18 years or so. These tags are invaluable to us as an operation. When tagging newborns, it is nice to only have to deal with a one piece product that can be applied quickly, easily and smoothly. Thanks Z Tags.
Ben Weston, Randolph, UT
I have been using Z Tags for 2 years now and none of my tags have fallen out.  For years I had trouble losing them until going to Z Tags.  I recommend them highly to all of my farm friends.  They also don't fade and are hardy as well.
Rachel Kundert, Lake Geneva, WI
Z Tags are the best. Don't have to worry about buttons. Fast and easy to use.
Louis Montoya, NM
Quick & easy & durable.
Paul Parmley, Monticello, KY
Clients like Z Tags for the ease of application and good retention. Preprinted tags are very visible.
Paul Chard DVM, Brush, CO
Best tag money can buy, nothing better. Haven't lost a tag in 2 years use from day 1. Color stays on the tag. Would not buy any other tag.
Tim Yeadon, Slayton, MN
We've used the cow tags in our cows. They stay in place and are easy to use. Calves received the calf tags. We buy stockers and use the feedlot tags. We've been well pleased with the durability of the tags. The one piece tag is a big plus.
Roy Foglesong, Meadow view, VA
We were using Duflex tags and they pulled out of the ears, tore the ears and some were in backwards. We switched to Z Tags and they are easier to use and read, they stay in the ears and are easy to put in the ear. Only 1 piece, no lost buttons! THANK YOU Z TAG! We LOVE your product!
Ladonna Yeadon, Slayton, MN
Great tags, require no tab, that's what I like. Easy to use.
William Bratton, Warm Springs, VA
I have tried all types of ID cow tags and Z Tags and are the ones that stay in the cow/calf ear and holds their visibility for years.
Tommy Martin, Moundville, AL
We use the Z Tags on our calves.  They're great because they are easy to move around between pastures and transport.  They're much more convenient to use when you don't have work space readily available.  Plus, Z Tags are quicker to apply when working a lot of calves.
